What is an essential oil?
What are essential oils? Essential oils are the essence of a plant, like the plants life blood/immune system , distilled and prepared for you to bring the power of nature into your home.
Inside many plants—hidden in roots, seeds, flowers, bark, —are concentrated, highly potent chemical compounds. These natural compounds are essential oils.
Essential oils give a plant its scent, protect it from hazardous environmental conditions & even predators as well as even assist it with pollination, among other important functions and benefits.
Essential oils work naturally with our bodies as the body can identify each of the complex constituents within an essential oils. Often when the body is given an over the counter product or a prescribed drug, the body can not identify and or use the synthetic components of many drugs. This is why we often experience side effects when using synthetic drugs.
How to use an essential oil?
There are very specific ways to use an essential oils. They are:
- Internally (specifically only in regards to DoTERRA CPTG oils)
Aromatically is when you take the lid off of a bottle of say Lavender and you inhale the sent of Lavender. Your sense of smell is linked to the olfactory which affects your limbic system and others. This is why aromas have such a powerful affect on your moods/emotions. To support change in ones mood, diffusing essential oils such as a citrus is proven to be the fastest way to improve ones mood.
Topical application is when you take a drop or two of your lavender and apply the essential oil to your skin or maybe a bug bite. Some essential oils are photosensitive to the sun such as most citrus oils. Such oils as citrus are not recommended for topical applications especially if you will be in the sun for extended period of time. When questioning the way to use an essential oil, use a reference tool such as a book on essential oils. There, you will find a key that will let you know if the oil can be applied to the skin N=neat (no carrier oil needed), S=sensitive (if applied to skin use a carrier oil) A=aromatic, T=topical, I=ingested
